SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER SLAMS INTO SPEED RADAR TRAILER

A suspected drunk driver was arrested by Orange Police after he crashed his Tesla into a traffic speed radar warning trailer placed in the center median turn lane on La Veta Avenue near Flower Circle shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

The City of Orange purchased several of these devices that use radar to detect vehicle speeds and display them, or flash “Slow Down”, to encourage voluntary compliance; they can also collect traffic data. They are educational traffic-calming tools rather than automated enforcement cameras.

The driver was given a field sobriety test and tested with a portable alcohol sensor device before being placed under arrest.

It in not uncommon for these types of trailers to be struck by cars, as they are often placed in the middle or sides of high traffic streets. This trailer was in a well lit area and was surrounded by orange traffic cones. It was raining at the time of the crash.
