An Orange Police K9 Officer was honored by the City Council Tuesday night for saving the life of a baby that was choking on a hair clip. Shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, January 19th Orange Police dispatch received a frantic 911 call reporting that a baby was choking and was not breathing.
Patrol Officers were immediately dispatched and Corporal Cates was the first to arrive and he immediately began trying to dislodge the object from the baby’s throat. After several attempts, the clip dislodged the baby began breathing.
Orange Firefighters arrived quickly and transported the baby to the hospital where she was checked out and determined to be ok.
Corporal Cates was honored at the City Council meeting on January 27th and awarded the Life Saving Medal for his quick and heroic actions that saved the baby’s life.
The baby and her mother were present at the meeting and thanked the Officer for saving her life. Orange Police Chief Adam Jevec placed the medal around Corporal Cates neck and congratulated him on a job well done, followed by the City Council and Mayor Dan Slater.
